r é n is Now Offering Locally Sourced Eggs That Have a Carbon Footprint 700% Smaller Than Imports

A portion of the proceeds will also go towards our humanitarian efforts in supporting the underprivileged and disadvantaged.

Here at r é n, we’re constantly looking for new ways to support the people of Hong Kong. With a determination in placing underprivileged and disadvantaged individuals into their dream roles within the F&B and hospitality industries, we’ve now also extended our efforts into supporting local businesses and agriculture by working with Kong Lung Hong from the renowned Tin Hong Three Yellow Chickens to distribute locally produced and sourced eggs to restaurants across Hong Kong.

As we continue recovering from the pandemic, the food industry is learning to adapt to new ways of working, with the farm-to-table concept coming to the forefront. The advent of sourcing locally instead of importing from halfway across the planet is not a surprising one, given the benefits of the former. For a start, sourcing locally is extremely beneficial to the ongoing fight against climate change and the pursuit of greater sustainability. In fact, each egg sourced locally boasts a carbon footprint 700 times smaller than one that’s imported from the US – yes, 700 – and that converts to roughly six hours of powering lighting at home. It’s a staggering statistic, and one we can no longer ignore as global temperatures and sea levels continue to rise, and catastrophic weather phenomena occur more frequently.

Of course, by sourcing locally, you’re also contributing to our economy by supporting local agriculture, local businesses, and most importantly, local people. “Hong Kong local poultry farms are tiny when compared with overseas mass-produced large-scale poultry farms like in Japan, Thailand, Australia, or the US,” says Kong Lung Hong’s KC. “This is due to government restrictions and the supply of agricultural land. By buying eggs from local farmers, we invest in our communities, strengthening local economies and preserving Hong Kong farmland. Let's not forget, that this is an important cornerstone of Hong Kong's culinary heritage, our food culture, having locally raised chickens and eggs. Local farmers are passionate about their work and strive to foster the best produce, to continue farming practices passed down from generations. By sourcing locally, we support their livelihood.”

And if sustainability and supporting locals aren’t reasons enough, then there’s also the fact that sourcing directly from our own farms will guarantee the freshness of your eggs. “Freshness is the key, as nutrition and taste are at their peak,” KC explains. “Imported eggs go through a long journey from the farm to intermediate storage to going through customs at the airport of the country of origin, freight time, customs again, journey to another storage and finally reaching retail shops and restaurants. Local farms can shorten this journey to a minimum. We have minimal storage time as we collect our eggs early in the morning and deliver them to our customers on the same day. Our chickens are raised without added growth hormones, steroids and antibiotics, and with premium natural feeds.”

If you’re ready to make a difference both inside and outside of your kitchen, our locally sourced eggs are now available. Let your plate be a link to the community that nurtures you. By embracing local produce, you are not just enjoying a premium ingredient; you are participating in a movement that celebrates sustainability, community, and a shared commitment to a better tomorrow for all. Let's embark on a brighter future together, one egg at a time!
